What are the Jiu Jitsu Belt Ranks?

Jiu Jitsu Adult Belt Ranks:

In Jiu Jitsu, you will start off as a White Belt. You must attain four stripes on each belt before being eligible to advance to the next colored belt. Each stripe on your belt equals a level in Jiu Jitsu. Once you receive 4 stripes on your White Belt, you are eligible for Blue Belt and the same process goes for Purple Belt and Brown Belt up to Black. Once a Black Belt, you will earn stripes also known as degrees.

Average Adult Time of Each Belt:

  1. WHITE TO BLUE: 12 to 18 MONTHS
  2. BLUE TO PURPLE: 2 -3 YEARS
  3. PURPLE TO BROWN: 2-3 YEARS
  4. BROWN TO BLACK : 2-3 YEARS

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kids Belt Ranks

The goal of children training Jiu Jitsu is to have them at a Blue Belt level by the time they are 16 years old. Kids can start in Jiu Jitsu as young as 5 years old in our program and work their way through the belts up to being 16 years old.  At 16, they can work towards their Blue, Purple, Brown and Black Belts.

Kid Belt System and their related ages

 WHITE – Beginner, any age

  1. GREY – 4 to 7 years of age
  2. YELLOW – 7 to 15 years of age
  3. ORANGE – 10 to 15 years of age
  4. GREEN – 13 to 15 years of age
  5. BLUE – 16 years of age or older
  6. PURPLE – 16 years of age or older
  7. BROWN – 18 years of age or older
  8. BLACK – 19 years of age or older

It is up to each instructor to decide how long it takes for a student to be graded, as long as the minimum times required for each belt are fulfilled.

Here are some examples of what the instructor will be looking for:

  • Be a good team member
  • Be consistent in training
  • Roll on or above your peer group level
  • Be a good training partner, help your teammates progress
  • Know your curriculum for each belt level

Remember, a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt is a White Belt that never quit!

Do I need to have any previous experience?

No experience is necessary and all levels of fitness can enjoy learning at Blackstone Jiu Jitsu. In ourgym,  we train as a team and all levels are welcome to train with us.  We encourage all our teammates to help develop other students, that way we get better as a whole.

What do I need for my first class?

Initially, nothing other than an open mind, a water bottle, and workout attire. If you wish to progress after the trial week, you will need to purchase a Jiu Jitsu GI. It is the standard uniform that we use to learn Jiu Jitsu. We also ask that you refrain from wearing watches, earrings, rings, bracelets as it is a full contact sport.

Do I have to be in shape to be able to do Jiu Jitsu?

Regardless of your fitness level, Jiu Jitsu will help you get in shape or keep you there.

Is Jiu Jitsu safe?

At Blackstone Jiu Jitsu, safety is our priority. Accidents may happen, but it is expected of all students to behave responsibly and be serious during training as carelessness can result in injury. With that said, this is a combat sport and there is a saying: "Get comfortable being uncomfortable." If you can be comfortable being uncomfortable, you'll be prepared to handle whatever situation comes along in your own life.

Do I have to compete to progress?

No, competing in Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournaments is not required to train or earn a belt promotion. In fact, only a small percentage of Jiu Jitsu practitioners compete, and most of those who do only compete a few times. However, some say that competing can be a tool for self-improvement and can help you learn and grow.

If you do wish to compete, we can help you prepare! Our instructors are experienced competitors and Blackstone Jiu Jitsu is an official registered academy with the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF)
